Churches and temples
Cathedral of the Epiphany
One of the oldest stone buildings not only in Irkutsk, but also in the whole of Siberia. In the XVII – XIX centuries – the cathedral of the Irkutsk diocese. It is located in the historical center of the city at the intersection of Sukhbaatar Street and the Lower Angara Embankment. It is an object of cultural heritage of the peoples of the Russian Federation of federal significance.
The Church of the Savior
The largest historical monument, one of the most ancient stone structures in both Siberia and the Far East, located on the territory of the lost Irkutsk Kremlin in the historical center of the city. The first painting appeared in the XIX century.
Theaters and museums
Irkutsk Academic Drama Theater named after N. P. Okhlopkov
One of the oldest drama theaters in Russia, founded in 1850. The repertoire of the theater combines world classics and modern drama. The group includes People's and Honored Artists of the Russian Federation, honorary citizens of the city of Irkutsk and the Irkutsk region. The theater is an object of cultural heritage of the peoples of the Russian Federation of federal significance
Irkutsk Regional Musical Theater named after N. M. Zagursky
The state cultural institution in Irkutsk, established in 1941 on the basis of the Gorky Musical Comedy Theater collective. The theater's repertoire includes more than 30 productions in various theatrical genres: rock opera, ballet, operetta, musical.
Irkutsk Regional Museum of Local Lore
The State Autonomous Cultural Institution of the Irkutsk region, established in 1782, the museum includes 7 exposition departments: department of history, department of nature, exhibition departments: "Window to Asia", "Museum Studio", icebreaker "Angara", V.G. Rasputin Museum, cultural and educational center in the village of Anga.
Irkutsk Regional Art Museum named after V. P. Sukachev
One of the richest treasures of fine art in Siberia. The core of the collection was the art gallery of the Irkutsk mayor Vladimir Sukachev, collected by him at the end of the XIX century. The museum's funds number over 23 thousand works of painting, graphics, sculpture, decorative and applied art. The collection includes a small but extremely rare collection of Paleolithic art monuments of the Baikal region.
Other attractions
Upper embankment (Gagarin Boulevard)
A wide, shady street, along which there is a bust of Yuri Gagarin and a monument to Alexander III. There is a marina on the edge, from where river trams depart. On holidays, stages and concerts are set up on this embankment, and summer terraces open in restaurants and cafes in summer.
Lower embankment
The oldest street in Irkutsk is lined with red tiles and fenced with wrought-iron fences. It is here that the most iconic places are concentrated: the first temples of the city — the Epiphany Cathedral and the Church of the Savior, the monument to the founder of Irkutsk Yakov Pokhabov, the triumphal arch "Moscow Gate", the Eternal Flame Square, sculptures of surveyors.
Eternal Flame
An object of cultural heritage of regional significance. The memorial was erected on May 8, 1975, and is located behind the government building of the Irkutsk region. The memorial complex is dedicated to the memory of Siberian soldiers who fell in battles against the Nazi invaders during the Great Patriotic War. The eternal flame was lit from a torch delivered by relay from the walls of the Moscow Kremlin.
Kirov Square
The main square of Irkutsk, which is located between Lenin and Sukhbaatar streets. Today, the main city events and mass festivities are taking place in the square and on the square.
